General Oblation Board

Where childhood ends and servitude begins, severed by steel.

Feared universally as the 'Gobblers,' the General Oblation Board operates from the shadows of the Magisterium. This clandestine arm executes heretical experiments on children, specifically targeting the bond between human and daemon. Disguised publicly as an institution for orphan care and education, its true purpose is to discover how to sever that bond without killing the subject—a process that leaves survivors physically intact but spiritually lobotomized, stripping them of curiosity, free will, and spiritual integrity.

Lore & Background

The Board maintains a trans-world network of deceptive institutions to abduct children under the guise of offering better education. Victims are transported to remote, frozen citadels like Bolvangar in the far north. There, amidst howling gales and sterile isolation, they employ a specialized apparatus to perform Intercision. While early attempts claimed countless lives, the Board perfected a method that keeps the child breathing but hollowed out—reducing vibrant humans to obedient servants devoid of critical thought or spiritual depth.

In Their Own Story

Lyra’s infiltration of Bolvangar peeled back the veil on this horror. She discovered rows of children in sterile holding cells, their daemons frozen in form by terror. Inside the operating theater, she witnessed the Intercision apparatus humming to life—a device designed to slice the soul from the body. Though she escaped before her own severing could take place, Lyra’s testimony revealed that many others were not so lucky; they survived the cut only as empty shells, their daemons locked in a single shape forever.

Reader's Guide

The Board represents the trilogy's ultimate antagonist: authority without conscience. Lyra Belacqua becomes the catalyst for its destruction, rallying a coalition of witches, armored bears, and air pirates to raid Bolvangar. This liberation marks the triumph of free will over dogmatic control, freeing the children from a fate worse than death and shattering the Magisterium's grip on childhood.
