The Authority is not the omnipotent Creator, but a frail, ancient angel—the first to emerge from Dust in the distant past of the multiverse. Mistaken by inhabitants of Lyra's world for God, this dying being fabricated a myth of singular dominion, demanding worship while hiding his own mortality. His reign was a house of cards built on fear and deception, upheld by angelic servants who suppressed knowledge of Dust to preserve their power.
In truth, the Authority is a withered ghost trapped at the edge of the universe in the void outside normal space, long stripped of vitality and control. He represents the ultimate cosmic lie: that there is only One Ruler. His eventual death from natural old age and extreme weakness, occurring while imprisoned by his own regent Metatron, shattered the concept of absolute divine rule, liberating Dust to flow freely once more.
