A child's daemon might dart from a cat to a butterfly to a dragonfly as they play, representing their unformed potential and curiosity. As the individual matures through adolescence, the daemon undergoes 'settling,' a pivotal moment where it chooses its permanent form. This choice is not made by the human consciously but emerges from the deepening of the soul; a timid person might settle into a mouse or hare, while a leader might become an eagle or lion, though exceptions exist based on hidden depths of character.

The bond between human and daemon is absolute. They feel each other's physical sensations and emotional states instantly. This connection makes lying difficult, as the body language of a daemon often betrays the human's deceit. The concept of 'intercision,' or cutting a child from their daemon, is considered the ultimate horror and a form of spiritual mutilation rather than death. It is practiced by agents known as Gobblers, who abduct children to sever them from their souls, leaving behind emotionless, soulless victims; however, these individuals are never referred to as 'wraiths' in the canon.

In Lyra's universe, every human can clearly perceive their own daemon; this visibility is universal and carries no social stigma or suspicion regarding one's ability to see them. In other universes within the multiverse, such as ours (the 'common' world), daemons do not exist. This absence is often cited by characters like Lord Asriel and Dr. Mary Malone as evidence that our world lacks a certain spiritual completeness or that our souls remain entirely internal. The presence of daemons defines the very physics and metaphysics of Lyra's world, where Dust particles interact with consciousness in ways that are physically observable through these animal forms.
