For centuries, natural windows connected these realms, but they were sealed and suppressed by the Magisterium to control the flow of Dust and prevent the spread of forbidden knowledge. It was not until these portals began to reappear that the Magisterium actively moved to destroy them in an effort to starve humanity of consciousness—the particle itself. The breach returned with Lyra Belacqua’s discovery, enabled by Will Parry finding the ancient Subtle Knife in Cittàgazze, an artifact created by a mysterious maker long before his time to slice reality's seams.
